viva zapata!

i love the gits. i've loved the gits before i knew who mia zapata was. i love 7 year bitch. i've loved 7 year bitch before i knew what viva zapata! meant. it's a tribute to mia zapata. lead singer of the gits. who was raped and murdered fifteen years ago in seattle. anyway, i just read on buzzsugar about the documentary that's being made about the gits...and i'm definitely sooooo excited to check this out! mia's death left a hole in the seattle music scene and left a legacy of women determined to make the world safer for women to do a simple task such as walking home from a friend's, like mia was the night she died. in her memory, her friends created the self defense and awareness group, home alive, a really great seattle organization. anyway, this stuff obviously hits really close to home for me and i can sympathize with mia's tragic story, so i've always found her to be a very interesting person. here's the story from buzzsugar:

Movie Preview: The Gits
Sun, 07/13/2008 - 2:00pm by BuzzSugar

On July 7, 1993, the lead singer of an up-and-coming Seattle blues-punk band, Mia Zapata was brutally murdered. She was only 27 years old. Her death sent a huge shock wave throughout Seattle, the epicenter of the alternative music movement at the time.

A new documentary, titled The Gits after Mia's band, follows the rise of the enigmatic performer on the brink of stardom, and the chilling and senseless circumstances of her death (the man who murdered her was just found, nearly 10 years later). Folks who have seen this documentary say it's a heartfelt tribute to what could have been, and is a reminder of how strikingly absent a female voice like Mia's is from today's music.

If you're at all fascinated by the grunge music scene in Seattle or what it meant to be a girl rocker at the time, you'll probably be way into this. You can find listings for local showings of the movie here (http://www.thegitsmovie.com/index.php) and you can find information about the DVD here (same website).

In the meantime, you can check out the trailer if you read more.

jibberish.

Ok so since the weather is so incredibly bad and I’m going to be in this car a lot longer than I care to be, I’m going to listen to all of the songs on my iTunes and compile a list of unexpectedly good songs, because I’ve never even come close to listening to all of the songs on my iTunes. But seriously, this would be so much better if both of my headphones were working instead of just the right one. I think my dog chewed on the wire. Anyway:
• “Swing With Me” by Jessica Simpson
• “Hitchcock Starlet” by Horrorpops
• “Fever” performed by Devil Doll, a little sexier than the original Peggy Lee
• “Livin’ on a Prayer” performed by Stellar Kart (I know, I’m really into covers….)
• “All I Have to Do is Dream” performed by the Dandy Warhols…really bizarre, but really fun
• “Truly Madly Deeply” performed by CASCADA
• “Wouldn’t It Be Good” by CASCADA, it’s basically the same song as “Every Time We Touch” but whatever!!!
• “Charlotte Sometimes” by the Cure (oh wait, I already knew this was a good song…oh, well, I’m rediscovering it!!!)
• “8th Grade” by Pencey Prep….who knew???
• “Gametime” by Tony Parker….hahahahahahaha I’m not kidding!!!! TONY PARKER IS A REALLY GOOD RAPPER!!!!!!!!! EN FRANCAIS!
• “5000 Miles” performed by Koopa….who the fuck are they?!?!?!
• “What Hurts the Most” performed by CASCADA….i HATE the rascal flatts version but I can deal with this
• “Seven Days of Lonely” by I Nine
• “Brother Can You Spare a Dime?” performed by Artwoods….seriously, I think covers are the cat’s meow!!!.....and yes, I did just say cat’s meow……
• “18 and Life” performed by Hydrogen….THIS GIRL HAS A BETTER VOICE THAN SEBASTIAN BACH!!!! As in the lead singer of skid row, original artist of this song, not the composer or anything….I loved this song in 9th grade…ha….my sister definitely hates this song because I’m sitting here dancing and singing along while I’m listening to it…..18 and life to gooooooooooooo…………..
• “Trippin’ On a Hole in a Paper Heart” by Stone Temple Pilots…..I feel like every march I get really into this song….but trust me, this march WILL NOT be like the last one…this spring will not be like the last one…..ok, this song, blech, gotta get it off….
• “I Will Survive” performed by Cake…so much, like, stronger…..if he ever came back, this is what I would say:
o At first I was afraid
o I was petrified
o I kept thinking I could never live without you by my side (not really, but it’s the song….)
o But then I spent so many nights just thinking how you done me wrong and I grew strong and I learned how to get along
o And so you’re back
o From outer space
o I just walked in to find you hear with that look upon your face
o I should of changed my fucking lock
o I would’ve made you leave your key
o If I’d a know for just one second you’d be back to bother me
o And now go walk out the door
o Just turn around now
o You’re not welcome anymore
o ……and that’s it cuz the rest of the song doesn’t fit my situation
o …..but on this note, this is a warning, if you are reading this, which I hope you’re not, but if you are, you know who you are, if you ever come back to Cleveland, Ohio, I WILL KILL YOU! I WILL HAVE YOU KILLED!!!!!!! I WON’T EVEN BOTHER CALLING THE POLICE BECAUSE YOUR STUPID ASS DOESN’T DESERVE A MOMENT ON THIS PLANET SO I WILL KILL YOU RIGHT THERE AND THEN!!! AND IF I GET TO SCARED TO KILL YOU, I WILL CALL THE POLICE AND YOU WILL GO TO PRISON FOR A LONG, LONG TIME BECAUSE OF WHAT YOU DID TO ME! I HATE YOU. YOU’RE A SOCIOPATH. YOU HAVE NO SOUL. YOU ARE THE DEVIL INCARNATE. THE ONLY WAY THE WORLD CAN EVER BE FREE OF YOUR EVIL IS FOR YOU TO DIE AND TRUST ME I WILL TAKE CARE OF THAT YOU CREEP!
o Anyway, thank God I got that off my chest….back to the list!
• “The Good Fight” by Dashboard Confessional
• “Earth Angel” performed by Death Cab for Cutie…this is quite possibly the best cover ever. No joke. Aaah, it makes me want to dress up in my 1950s garb….ugh, I would have to lose weight to do that. I wish I could. I wish I could dress up like a little starlet. Just throw on some pumps and red lipstick and look like a pinup….ah, that’ll be the day….
• “Come Go With Me” by Sugar and Spice….I’ve been listening to the Tokens’ version for so long, but this is a lot better!!!
• AAAAH, Ok, possibly the worst cover ever: “How Soon is Now?” performed by TATU. Gah, I’m embarrassed that I even own this song!!!
• “Istanbul, Not Constantinople” performed by They Might Be Giants….ah, this song has been stuck in my head for days ever since I started watching that new show New Amsterdam cuz the song has that part- “Even old New York, was once New Amsterdam, why they changed it I can’t say, people just liked it better that way!”
• “DEAD MEN DON’T RAPE” by 7 Year Bitch
• “Jessie’s Girl” performed by Frickin’ A
• “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tommy James and the Shondells, not the cover by Tiffany!!!
• “Love Song” performed by Anberlin
• “Cannonball” by the Breeders
• “Summer of 69” by Bryan Adams….hahahahahaha.
• “Where the Boys Are” by Connie Francis
• “Heaven” performed by DJ Sammy
• “I’m So Sick” by Flyleaf
• “You Spin Me Round” performed by Jessica Simpson
• “Detachable Penis” by King Missile
• “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks
• and finally, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” performed by SheDAISY
That’s all folks, because we’re finally getting off the Ohio Turnpike!!!! Catch ya lata!!!! MWAH!!!!

genuine.
