Agyness to Act
Jun 24, 2008 @ 1:01pm
It's official. The Brits are completely obsessed with Agyness Deyn.

The model of the moment turned singer turned actor will be appearing in a Doctor Who Christmas Special on the BBC. We're not exactly sure what this special entails, but according to The Mirror, Doctor Who remains "the Beeb's [that's BBC] jewel in the crown," so apparently it's kind of a big deal, winning ratings since it was revived in 2005.

We're happy for Aggy, but seriously, how far is too far? In an industry constantly looking for the next big thing, abandoning what's passe, oversaturation can be career ending.

The move is particularly risky considering Christopher Bailey reportedly dropped the model from the upcoming Burberry campaign due to "overexposure." But we feel like she has to have heard the message loud and clear too many times to not know what a Christmas TV special could do to her. Could she be planning a total career crossover?

The Scoop on Agyness Deyn's Acting Gig

Modeling seems to be the furthest thing from Agyness Deyn's mind these days. After singing on Five O'Clock Heroes track "Who" and starting her own band called Gene Jacket, she's now acting in a short film by her friend and bandmate Alanna Masterson, 19-year-old sister of actor Danny Masterson. "It's the first time I've actually had to speak!" Deyn trilled when we caught up with her on set in Long Island yesterday. "I kind of feel like fish out of water, and I’m finding a big pond to swim in. I just like opening up different channels and keeping myself interested.” She plays the imaginary friend of lead character James, a teenager grieving over the death of his sister. "I have had a few friends that have lost people and you do remember that stuff … emotion memory," Deyn said. "It’s only natural that if you are playing a part you’ll remember experiences from your life, but my part is very lighthearted, quite sarcastic, and fun in contrast to [James's] grieving." Masterson wrote the film, her thesis for New York Film Academy, which also stars her brother Jordan and Dustin Hoffman's son Jake. Its working title is The Right Side of My Exultant Brain.

So, is Aggy vying for an acting career when her modeling days run out? "Not necessarily," she said. "We’ll see how it goes. It’s nice working on this particular thing because it’s friends, and it’s a very chilled environment to learn." She studied drama at college, but it was "very theory-based," she added. "I’m just throwing myself in.” — Fiona Byrne

Burberry Dropped Agyness Deyn Because She's Too Famous?

Agyness Deyn has been dropped from the Burberry campaigns for reportedly being too famous. According to the U.K.'s Metro, photographer Mario Testino, Burberry's "advertising visionary," is sick of seeing her face, a "checked-cap mole" said:

She was just a flash in the pan. Last year she was quirky but now she is challenging [Kate] Moss in the fame stakes by positioning herself everywhere. That kind of popularity just hasn't sat well with Mario, who is looking for something different.

We've learned from way too many cycles of America's Next Top Model that models are generally encouraged to avoid talking back (Nigel Barker has delicate feelings, after all), voicing their opinions, displaying their personalities, or doing anything that would cause you to actually remember their names. Perhaps because it makes them a bit more disposable? The industry may prefer faces without names, but the public likes being on a first-name basis with supermodels. We hope Burberry didn't pull an Elle (too soon after Nina-gate?) on this one and let a good one go. Also, let's not forget that Testino is an avid Moss supporter, reportedly calling her his favorite.

Deyn's rumored replacement is 21-year-old Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, last seen on the arm of Christopher Bailey at the Met's Costume Institute gala. It all comes together now…

How to Get Tinsley Mortimer's Face in Just Fifteen Steps

You've probably always wondered, What do I have to do to make my face look just like Tinsley Mortimer's? Well, friends, this morning we bring you answers. Yesterday at Saks we learned it just takes 41 minutes, fourteen products, and fifteen steps to achieve her effortless nighttime look. Tinz herself was at the store shilling her brand-new Dior lip gloss, Tinsley Pink, proceeds from which benefit Operation Smile. We couldn't wait to learn how to get as pinked out as Tinz in the two-hour master class on the fifteen steps, but apparently there's more to Tinz than pink. Like yellow. "I love pink. I had a pink bedroom growing up, so it’s kinda stuck in my head. But I do wear other colors," she told us. "Now I’m into yellow. Yellow is the new pink. Well, at least for now." Befuddled, we turned to her sister, Dabney Mercer. "We’re into yellow now, sure, but Tinsley will always wear pink," she said. Whew!

Enough about color — we're here for the face paint! Tinsley's makeup artist, Ricky Wilson, said New York girls wear too much eyeliner and they should try playing with shadow, like — you guessed it! — Tinsley. " She likes a stronger eye, but something that’s also soft and smudged. She likes exaggerated eyeliner and loves tons and tons of lashes." Tinsley's a veritable fountain of youth now, but is she afraid of aging? "I’m not afraid of it. It’s something that happens," she said. Is Botox in her future? No! "I’d never do it," she added. But maybe it is! "Who knows? I’m not there yet."

At last it was time for us to get Tinsley's fifteen-step, fourteen-product look. The results and a step-by-step illustrated guide after the jump.

Fifteen Steps to Look Like Tinsley: 1. Apply Capture Totale serum to firm the skin.
2. Apply less than a teaspoon of Capture Totale moisturizer. It also firms the skin.

3. Apply a pearl-size dollop of Capture Totale eye cream right underneath the eyes.

4. Now it's time to spray on that all-important foundation. Tinsley uses Airflash, which is fun to apply because it sprays. Smooth with a brush, blend to the neck. You risk disaster if you don't properly blend.

5. Prime lids for eye shadow with a cream shadow base. This locks in shadow, and also ensures shadow pigments appear the same color as they do in the palette.

6. Apply the five-color eye-shadow palette #609, which contains pink, two browns, gold, and cream. Brush the pink below the crease of the eye, then highlight all over with gold. Add light brown in the creases and corners.

7. Apply pencil eyeliner #99 at the top and bottom lash line. Make sure you connect corners from top to bottom lash lines.

8. Return to the palette from step six. Apply the dark-brown shadow over the liner. This seals in the liner and helps it last longer.

9. Now add Skinflash concealer under the eyes. Yes, we're still on eyes, people! It’s a twist-up container like ChapStick, so simply draw a line under the eyes with the brush and then blend with your finger or a brush.

10. Then apply DiorShow mascara — the No. 1 selling mascara by Dior. Tinsley said she uses so many bottles of this a year, it’s “shocking.”

11. Next, apply a second mascara, Dior Blackout. Yes, brush this over the DiorShow. Tinsley always doubles up on mascara. It makes a big difference.

12. Now dust on shimmer powder in #002 for a bronze glow. Sweep a brush over the entire powder palette (a six-shade combo) and highlight the cheekbone.

13. Apply blush in #639 just as you did the shimmer-powder bronzer to the apples of your cheeks.

14. For brunettes only: Draw on lip liner #433. Blondes: Skip to step fifteen.

15. It's time for Tinsley Pink! The bright-pink color goes on sheer, with a touch of tint and shimmer with microscopic sparkles. Brush on and blot.

16. Glow like Tinsley! (This step is our addition.)

Total makeup products used: Fourteen
Total mentions of pink: Four
Total time invested: Two hours
Verdict: The look is not as pink as expected, which we like, but the foundation looks and feels heavy. But at last our mission to look just like Tinz has been accomplished. And in under three hours!

Science Proves Shopping Really Is a Drug

The Wall Street Journal tells us a nice tale today about the time homemaker Donna Hoffman visited New York from South Carolina, went antiquing, and dropped $400 on a magnifying glass. She didn't really want a $400 magnifying glass, so why did she do it? Those little devils serotonin and dopamine in her brain got the best of her. Research shows that when we shop our brains release chemicals like these, creating brief euphoric moments — when we discover new things (like handbags), turn onto a new uncluttered aisle, see a nice store display, or encounter a friendly sales associate. So the whole idea of retail therapy — that shopping makes us feel better — is a scientifically proven phenomenon. But it doesn't always work in our favor: Studies show when we shop when we're feeling blue, we're more likely to spend unwisely.

A writer from the Journal put on some brain-chemical monitors and went shopping at T.J. Maxx and Intermix to test this whole thing out. Her happy chemicals spiked when she looked at a handbag that reminded her of a Marc Jacobs one she once wanted. They also soared when she looked at brightly colored clothes and turned onto a new aisle full of clothes she wanted to explore. But fishing through crowded racks of clothes killed her spike, and nothing happened when she tried on items she was seriously thinking about buying. Which explains Donna's weird $400 magnifying-glass purchase and subsequent return just hours later.

Retailers commission studies on stuff like this so they can create stores that'll make you super happy so you super spend. The obvious thing to do now would be to warn you not to shop after breakups and bad days. But you know what? Where's the fun in that? We're going to peer-pressure you to shop more. Because we like that shopping high and we trust ourselves (and you!) not to abuse it like we have other things in the past (kidding!). And if we overspend, so what? Everyone's gotta have a vice. And that's why they invented returns.

Agyness Deyn Forms Her Own Band

Agyness Deyn is really determined to make this rock-and-roll thing happen. Following her musical debut singing vocals on "Who" with the Five O'Clock Heroes, she's formed her own band with her friends Alanna Materson and Jackson Pollis. We admit we were skeptical about her musical ambitions when we first heard "Who," but we applaud her for really going for it, taking matters into her own hands. She told the Mirror:
"We've got three or four songs. We wrote a cool song called Hotel and another called Yellow Tights.
"I've always loved music. I started playing guitar a few years ago and I'm not Jimi Hendrix or anything, but it's relaxing to play some music."

Agyness said she knows people will take the mickey out of her musical efforts.

But she added: "I think you should do what makes you happy."

Carpe diem, sister! Since we'll never become rock-and-roll stars, maybe we can run some song ideas by you, Aggy? We've just been dying to share. We have a great song about our high-school prom dress called "Pink Taffeta." And of course, the follow-up to "Yellow Tights," "Sheer Pantyhose." You'll call us, right? Right?

Jessica Stam, DJ
May 07, 2008 @ 2:56pm

Now that Agyness Deyn is back in Europe, a new model must take the reigns of DJ decks across New York.

Ladies and gentlemen, that model is Jessica Stam.

The blonde who claims The Virgins as her favorite band and Anthony Kiedis as her ex-boyfriend will take the turntables next week at Eyebeam Studios, when The Down To Earth party hypes Women's Health Magazine (which we're sure Stam has never been in) and The Environmental Media Association.

But can Stam actually DJ?

Well, probably not, but maybe she's been taking night lessons:

Besides being pals with Leigh Lezark of The MisShapes, she also dated DJ AM, who seems to know a thing or two about mix tapes.

WHAT?!?!?!?! NOOOOOOOO!

Agyness Deyn's Got a New Single — But Will It Rock?

Because there's nothing Agyness Deyn can't do, she sings lead vocals on "Who," a track by New York–based band Five O'Clock Heroes. The single drops on June 23, and Aggy will star in the single's music video, naturally. She's certainly got the spunky rock-and-roll look down; we can totally see her onstage in leather half-gloves tugging her hair as she wails the high notes. However, past supermodels who have tried to jump from catwalk to concert stage haven't been so well received. Let's reminisce, shall we?
• Tyra Banks recorded her first single, "Shake Ya Booty," in 2004. The music video, faithful America's Next Top Model viewers will recall, featured contestants from the show's second cycle. The single flopped, and Banks's album, T.Y.R.A., never dropped. She later said on her talk show, she couldn't believe she wasted six years on something she never released.

• Kate Moss jumped onstage with Pete Doherty's band, Babyshambles, in 2006 a few times, when the two were dating. She loaned her vocals to Babyshambles track "La Belle et la Bête," and previously sang a track on a Primal Scream album. Very few people rooted for her to pursue a singing career after either attempt.

• Irina Lazeraneau also dabbled with Babyshambles, reportedly helping to write "La Belle et la Bete." She recorded an album and made her singing debut during the Chanel pre-fall show in December. Very few thought she sounded very good.

On the other hand, Milla Jovovich did alright. So, lessons are as follows: Have a really lovely voice, avoid plugging your album on reality TV, and stay the hell away from Pete Doherty.

just stop.

Agyness Releases Magnum on Vinyl
Apr 29, 2008 @ 3:30pm

We tried to defend Aggy, we really did, but this does not help her cause.

Maybe all that Coachella Valley sun and music got into her head, because NME just announced that the world's most over-exposed pixie cut will release her first single.

Yes, like, music single.

She's collaborating with New York band Five O'Clock Heroes, singing on the track titled 'Who', dancing around in the upcoming promo video, and probably being really, really, ridiculously good looking on the cover to be released June 23rd.

Maybe she, Kate, Karen, Omahyra and Irina can form like a Spice Girls of the runway tribute girl group.

Can't wait.

How to Be Agyness: Her Clothes Are Random But Affordable

We love fashion people who don't take fashion too seriously: Marc Jacobs is one, Agyness Deyn is another — and Deyn recently stole the No. 1 spot on Tatler magazine's best-dressed list from Kate Moss. Like Moss, when Deyn wears something unique and original, it becomes an instant trend. See, while normal people (read: non-Amazonian beanpoles who look good in things like boy haircuts) like us agonize over whether to spend $200 on white-framed sunglasses, Deyn throws on the $30 pair and doesn't think twice about it. Then, we presume, she laughs at fledgling fashionistas trying to imitate her. She calls her style "proper mad" and tells the London Times:
“Sometimes, I think it would be funny to do random stuff and see if it catches on,” she jokes. It’s all a long way from her Lancashire childhood; even 18 months ago, she was still a jobbing model. Deyn is only just getting used to signing autographs. “I never know what to write. I always say, ‘Nice to see you, to see you, nice. Aggy.’ Then I put a love heart.”
See? Even her autograph subtly says, "I can't believe you take this seriously." To Aggy we say, love heart right back at you, right back at you, love heart. Or something.

Helpfully, the Times breaks down the price tags of a few of Deyn's most famous looks and proves fabulous doesn't always come with a three- or four-figure price tag (take that "real" housewives of New York). After the jump, the Times puts together two of Deyn's iconic, mostly affordable outfits, complete with costs.

Fashion Catfight: Agyness Deyn vs. Kate Moss for Best Dressed

You don’t just take Kate Moss’s best-dressed crown and walk away unharmed. Moss, a clotheshorse legend, has spurred some of the most influential trends: menswear-inspired vests, leopard-print jackets, and of course, skinny jeans. So when Agyness Deyn won Tatler magazine's best-dressed award, a trophy Moss has won the past two years, fashion’s collective eyebrow most definitely raised. To confirm the surprisingly verdict, we put the two offbeat Brits head-to-head. Turns out Deyn does deserve the victory; Moss commmited self-sabotage by cashing in on a Topshop collection and then, alas, actually had to wear the stuff.
After the jump, we take Kate and Agyness to the sartorial cage match.

Casual Attire: Point - Moss
Moss: Huge points here for the sharp black blazer and boots. And the cock-printed T-shirt shows the 34-year-old mother has, if nothing else, not lost her sense of humor. Her classic accessories, gray ostrich bag, and shades balance the look out as well. But shorts over tights? Eh … we expected better.
Deyn: Shown leaving the Chanel pre-fall show, gift bag in hand, the Brit looks thrilled in a leather pants, chunky red sweater, tie-dye sock combo. We love that she’s not always teetering around on heels, though with her, legs why would you need to? But in the end, we’re thinking this look is more eighties nightmare than '08’s fantasy.

Cocktail Attire: Point - Deyn

Moss: Bringing her Topshop collection to Barneys, Moss dresses the part in one of her own breezy designs. Black and white, usually tough to screw up, looks frumpy here, even though the sheer dress is tightly belted. The punchy yellow clutch, however, is a fun touch.

Deyn: As Christopher Bailey’s muse, Deyn storms the Seventh on Sale event in a ruffled, skintight Burberry number. The teal color absolutely glows on her, while the silhouette is just offbeat enough to maintain Deyn’s signature whimsy. Bold, black heels and a clutch and bright nails round out the look.

Formal Dress: Point - Tie
Moss: Moss appears in her most successful Topshop look at the Costume Institute Gala. The tiered gown is an understated, beautiful take on the basic black dress. Here, Moss herself grabs the attention, rather than a wild outfit. Soft hair and dangling earrings nicely frame her face. It’s eveningwear, minus the hefty effort and extravagant budget.
Deyn: Always a hit with emerging U.K. designers, Deyn dons a dramatic, floor-sweeping Giles dress to pick up her “Model of the Year” award at the British Fashion awards. Her spiked, bleached hair blends effortlessly with the gown’s punkish glamour. And the sheer sections amp up the tomboyish pixie’s sex appeal.

Party Attire: Point - Tie

Moss: Girl looks like a hot mess, and we mean that in the most loving of ways. She’s having a blast, dancing with friends at the Topshop holiday-range launch party. We wish we were there (mainly to ask her why she had to select the black satin jumpsuit! Why?! Has Marc’s Arabian Nights costume taught us nothing?). The sparkly caplet and diamond bracelets try to redeem the ensemble but can’t.

Deyn: It’s a little bit suburban-mom-goes-to-a-holiday-party (sparkly vest, buttoned-up blouse, tapered plaid pants) with a touch of little bit British ragamuffin (worn-in leather newsboy). Kudos for even thinking of mixing these pieces together; fashion needs less of Rachel Zoe’s predictable formula and more street-chic spontaneity. But the colors, the patterns, the proportions — it’s a little much for us.

Hair: Point - Deyn

Moss: For a tiebreaker, we're forced to judge the accessory any ensemble depends upon: hair. Last year Moss launched a hair-product line … kinda strange because hers usually looks like it hasn’t been washed in days (but yeah, we think that’s pretty glam too). If only she'd held off and waited to patent her new banged look.

Deyn: Okay, so she didn’t originate the pixie cut. Even Moss tried the look in 2001. But Deyn’s revamped the cute style. Now it’s irreverent and modern and a refreshing departure from the cascading, pale brown locks other catwalkers sport. And waves of fashion-forward girls are following suit.

Blonde Takes a Backseat
Feb 29, 2008 @ 1:10pm
Our favorite runway trends aren't usually about the clothes - instead they're subtle shifts that signify something social, something cultural, and something that almost everyone can do at home.

This season, it seems to be hair color, which has been dulled and deepened until yellow blondes and platinum blondes have all but vanished from the runways.

Some of this season's biggest newbies are Masha Tyelna, Ali Stephens, and Heloise Guerin - all with ashy brown hair. Meanwhile, Mariacarla Boscono seems to be making a major runway comeback, with hair restored back to its natural brown (two years ago, she reigned supreme on the runways with a brand new white-blonde bob).

Meanwhile, Jessica Stam, Tanya Dziahileva, and Karlie Kloss seem to have toned down their sunkissed streaks to match Abby Lee's chamomile tint, and the white-blonde girls among them - Agyness Deyn and Sasha Pivovarova - have crawled home sick.

Does this mean we can cancel our appointment at Bumble & Bumble, and grow everything out?

beware girls, i will be copying you.

from whowhatwear daily:

Have you been wondering about the sparkly skirt Rachel Bilson’s recently wore on TRL? Want to know everything about Natalie Portman’s fire engine red shoes? Hungry for Sienna’s bag du jour? In today’s bimonthly edition of What Was She Wearing: Answers! we’ve got all the details and more.

Sienna Miller
Sienna Miller makes her first WWSW appearance this year, courtesy of reader curiosity over two fantastic wardrobe pieces she wore at LAX earlier this month. The first item that appealed to you, dear readers, was Miller’s Juicy Couture Long Sleeve Striped Cardigan ($104), which is not only a swell sweater for jet setters, but also an excellent wardrobe staple. The second item you honed in on is the delicious arm candy Miller was carrying. Her Zufi Alexander Kiss Me Baby handbag is from the designer’s Glory Collection and has been spotted in the hands of many other celebs as well, including Katherine Heigl ($1250, Katherine Tess, 516.621.0955).

Rachel Bilson
In early February, Rachel Bilson appeared on TRL and moments later our lovely readers flooded us with questions (and compliments) about her professional chic ensemble. It delights us to inform you that Jenni Kayne is the mastermind behind Bilson’s Short Sleeve Cotton Pocket Shirt ($325) and Marled Charcoal Beaded Tuck Mini Skirt ($495). You can buy them now at any Jenni Kayne store, just check the designer’s website for locations or ring the LA store (310.860.0123). Miss Bilson finished her outfit off, unsurprisingly, with the ever-reliable, classic Christian Louboutin Simple 85 Pumps ($520). Try the Ash Tiffany Hidden Platform Pump by Ash for a similarly shaped shoe ($165).

Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman, a beautiful newcomer to WWSW, was inspiring in both her actions and outfit at the launch of her vegan footwear collection for Te Casan in NYC earlier this month. Portman wore a style of shoe from her own line, naturally, and her red, faux-patent Mary Janes, a.k.a. the Pippa Heel, is currently available for preorder ($265). The actress also wore Derek Lam’s Animal Spot Print Georgette One Piece ($1490), which is currently in stock at Kirna Zabete (212.941.9467). We also recommend Rory Beca’s Dava V Neck Tunic as a budget-friendly option ($100).

Agyness Deyn
It pleases us to receive inquiries regarding Agyness Deyn, our very first Model of the Moment, who continues to ascend into supermodel stardom while earning kudos along the way for her cutting-edge personal style. Deyn marches to the beat of her own drum when it comes to her wardrobe selections. At the recent Elle Style Awards she exemplified our third pointer in this week’s WWWD Tips by pairing a funky print dress from House of Holland’s Stephanie & Axl collection with an oversized blazer designed by Stephen Sprouse. While her jacket is vintage, there are a handful of pink blazers from J.Crew currently listed on eBay that will make great alternatives. Also, the Jonathan Saunders collection at Topshop offers some great options for print dresses like the one Agyness is wearing. To further achieve Agyness’s look, order a pair of her Wolford Suspender Tights ($51) and Linda Farrow sunglasses ($300). On a final foot note, you can emulate Deyn’s Burberry boots by nabbing Dolce Vita’s Hans Suede High Heel Ankle Booties in black ($87.50 on sale) —JESSICA AMENTO, additional reporting by Lily Huber

Agyness: Officially Unreal
Feb 20, 2008 @ 9:00am

For those of who you worship Agyness Deyn, your taste has just been venerated. For those of who you are sick to death of her, well, we hope you're not going to shop at a Zara anytime soon.

The Daily Telegraph reports that Adel Rootstein, the British mannequin company, has designed an Agyness model to launch in a Dusseldorf branch of Zara before being released in Zara's worldwide.

With this deal, Agyness joins the ranks of Twiggy, a former Adel Rootstein mannequin herself, and kind of one-ups Kate Moss, who was rejected by the late Adel Rootstein herself for being "too short."

Aggie is reportedly hanging on to just one life-size doll of herself - maybe to send down the runway on skates to pick up a little extra cash?

We hope the Zara window dressers are smart enough to not put the Agyness mannequins anywhere near the windows - she'd be a prime steal for those smash-and-grabbers...

[PS If you can't get yourself to a Zara, or if you just can't wait, you could always wear Agyness' likeness on your back - is this girl a phenomenon or what?]
